Farmers Market

The following is the weekly newsletter from Lynn Caldwell, Manager of the Atherton Market. It’s an incredible feature to have a year round, in-door market in South End and I appreciate all the hard work from Lynn and the vendors to make this happen! To subscribe to the Atherton Market Newsletter click here. Check out the details for this week and make note that the market has new hours for Wednesday 11am-7pm. Additionally the market is open Tuesdays 3-7pm and Saturdays 9am-2pm.

Atherton Market now Accepts EBT!

EBT Now Accepted at the Atherton Market

May 2, 2012 – Charlotte, NC Individuals with SNAP benefits are now able to use their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card at the Atherton Market. Upon arrival to the market, EBT customers can use their card to purchase $1 tokens. These tokens then function as cash within the market.

At the market, EBT card holders are able to purchase authorized goods such as: fruits and vegetables, meats, fish, poultry, dairy, honey, breads, baked goods, jams and jellies, processed foods and even seeds and plants which produce food.

And it’s not just EBT customers who are benefiting from the ability to use their cards at the Atherton Market. Farmers and other vendors will benefit from the increased sales and traffic at the market, as they are able to redeem the tokens for a 100% cash exchange.

“This is a long overdue, win-win opportunity for everyone involved in the Atherton Market.  We are excited to be able to provide this benefit to customers who can now have access to the freshest, healthiest produce and products that North Carolina has to offer!” says Market Director Lynn Caldwell.

What’s happening this week at the Atherton Market?Hello, summer!  The hot weather news is a mixed bag of good and bad for the farmers and the fields.  We’re seeing some early summer goodies like (greenhouse) tomatoes and high tunnel squash, alongside the first of the sugar snap peas and the last weeks of yummy greens.  You can get all kinds of seedlings to plant your own summer garden, as I think we’re safely past the last frost. You can also get potting soil and other implements, so check around to see what is available. We’ve also got lots of experts around to help get your garden going and growing, and this weekend we’ll have a couple of short sessions by Pat Farrell of Little Gnome Gardens at the rear of the market beside the new kids zone on a couple of topics that should interest you if you aren’t already well versed.  Her first session is called “Understanding Soil, What’s Really Underfoot?”  from 10:30-10:45am and will be followed by ” Is it organic, natural, sustainable and what do these terms really mean.  Marketing or Reality?” from 11:15 to 11:30 am.  There will be limited seating, some standing room, and lots of time for questions after.

In case you missed that reference to the new kids zone, Ms. Ann will have a new home near the beloved Trolley Car #1.  Look for the picket fence to engage your kids in fun activities, including a Mother’s Day craft this weekend.

Near the front door this Saturday you’ll find locally esteemed Chef Marc Jacksina from Halcyon, Flavors of the Earth doing a cooking demonstration with seasonal goodies.  This talented guy can put a twist on just about anything, so don’t miss his entertaining banter as well as his exquisite cuisine.  Stay tuned to Facebook for more details, but he should be ready to cook around 10 am.

If you want to see what’s growing in Charlotte area community gardens, reserve your space by Wednesday for the Can You Dig It tour sponsored by the Fruit and Veggie Coalition.  The tour begins at the Atherton Market, with gathering, breakfast, and shopping opportunities between 8 and 9 am.  Some of our vendors are setting up early to accommodate, so feel free to stop by a little before our usual 9 am opening hour.

Don’t forget our event tonight!  Our partner, the Carolina Learning Connection is having their launch event at the Atherton Market beginning at 6:30 pm.  Meet some of the teachers, and enjoy music by the Tsunami Waveriders, as well as wine and tasty local creations from the dedicated vendors of the market.  You will also have a chance to win a $75.00 gift certificate and enroll in a class without paying the usual $5 registration fee.  Don’t miss it, as well as a chance to see where we are with renovations.

We are also VERY proud to announce the opportunity to accept EBT at the Atherton Market beginning TODAY.  We’ve been working with the USDA and the Health Department to get set up with a machine, tokens, and the behind-the-scenes infrastructure to accept government-issued benefits to get more fresh food into more hands.  This is just the first of many efforts to work within the community to expand our reach and join hands with other orgahizations to support both our farmers and folks who need a little assistance and better nutrition.

For the next couple of weeks while we complete construction and reorganization, the Atherton Market will be open on Tuesdays from 3-7 and Saturdays 9-2.  We’ll soon announce our new hours, which will offer you more shopping days and other exciting opportunities!  We’re hard at work to make this the best year ever.

In regard to that – think about this question.  What is the one thing you think is missing from the Atherton Market?  Feel free to respond to this newsletter or send an email to athertonmarket@gmail.com.  We’ll look forward to your answers.  This is, after all, a market for you.

Happy May Day!

  1. Hi
I’m Andera the designer of Dera’s Designs. Currently, I crochet shawls and purses. I would love an opportunity to show my designs at the Alberton Market. I think this would be an ideal location to show off my one of a kind creations. I would gladly send you a few pictures of my creations to assist with your decision. I think it is a perfect place because they are handmade, perfect for spring, summer, fall and winter. They can be worn over suits for church and other outings, cover-ups for the beach or a chilly night over a sundress and many other ways.
    Thank you for your considerations.

    Andera
