We are in the middle of Bike! Charlotte 2011, which is 17 days of bicycle-related events and promotions used to encourage families, friends and colleagues to break out the bike and integrate it into their daily routine. These events area happening all across Charlotte but many are centered around South End so wanted to highlight a few. Bike! Charlotte will culminate with Cycle Charlotte festival on Saturday, May 14 at Icehouse in the Atherton Mill. Details for Cycle Charlotte are listed below but for a complete list of events visit Bike! Bikes on CATS Buses and LYNX Train for FREE – May 1-9
The Charlotte Area Transportation System is anyone traveling with a bicycle on CATS Buses and the LYNX Train for free, May 1-9, during BIKE! Charlotte. Using the bicycle, in combination with a CATS Bus or the LYNX Train, is an efficient, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly way to travel in the Queen City. Bike to Work Day – Friday, May 6
Have you ever wondered how different the route you take to the office everyday would look with out a car? Challenge yourself, for one day, to take the most exhilarating transportation available to work, the bicycle! For information on routes or other local commuters who have found success in riding their bikes to work, visit www.bikementor.org. The League of American Bicyclists also offers a great website loaded with tips addressing carrying cargo, parking, security, and hygiene.
South End Bike First Friday – May 6
Historic South End is home to over a dozen art galleries and hosts a gallery crawl on the first Friday of every month. We invite you to come join us on a new way to experience the South End Gallery Crawl: on a bike! We’ll meet in the parking lot of Icehouse South End, located in Atherton Mill, and give you the pertinent information you will need to hit the galleries and head out for a nice bike ride!

Travel by Bicycle – Wednesday, May 11
Ever dream about traveling on your bicycle? Whether riding across the county or the continent, the bicycle offers a way to truly experience the local culture and environment. Learn more about the techniques, equipment and variety of approaches to bicycle travel and how to create your own bicycle adventure! Refreshments will be served.

Tour De Light Rail – Friday, May 13
Come join us for a tour of the Light Rail Path! We will meet at Inside-Out Sports and hop on the path at the Bland Street Station. We will ride down to Scaleybark and back towards Morehead, passing by all of the great shops and restaurants along the way. At the conclusion of the tour, we will stop at the Common Market Deli and have some post ride refreshments. The ride is approximately 6 miles; children under 16 must be accompanied by adults. Not recommended for children with training wheels.

Cycle Charlotte – Experience Charlotte Without a Windshield – Saturday, May 14
Cycle Charlotte is a bicycle festival promoting a friendly and safer environment for bicycle transportation in the Queen City. This fun event takes place on the final weekend of Bike! Charlotte, and is a family friendly ride designed to encourage anyone who owns a bike to brush the cobwebs from their wheels, fill their tires with air, and come out to ride! The day includes a children’s bicycle safety rodeo, a police supported 15 and 30 mile ride through Uptown Charlotte and surrounding neighborhoods, and an after party with food, drinks, and live music!
Location: Icehouse South End (2100 South Blvd)
Time: 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Cost: $20 includes the ride, food, and entry into the live music
