The South End Gallery Crawl occurs on the First Friday of every month and has the largest number of participating galleries in all of Charlotte. Gallery Crawls are an enjoyable way to spend a Friday evening whether you are an art connoisseur or someone like me who barely passed Art Appreciation in college. South End offers a wide range of galleries and attracts a diverse audience. If you like to support local art and local business then you need to be in South End for Gallery Crawl.
A few things to note from an experienced Gallery Crawler. First, South End has the largest number of galleries in Charlotte but not every gallery is crawlable. To hit them all you will need a car, bike, scooter, horse, etc but it is worth it to hit them all if you are feeling adventurous. Many are crawlable so feet will work just fine. Second, most galleries offer light refreshments (wine and cheese) but would recommend dinner before or after at one of the great South End restaurants. Finally, parking is free in South End so shouldn’t be an issue for anyone.
Next Gallery Crawl is this Friday, June 3rd from 6-9pm and below are a few highlights for this month. Please note that the South End Fieldhouse is hosting some special events for Gallery Crawl this month as well as Charlotte ARTery.
Lark & Key Gallery– Lark & Key Gallery presents Second Nature, on view June 1 through July 30. Opening reception Friday, June 3 from 6-9pm during the South End Gallery Crawl. Second Nature features the work of Susan Hall, Duy Huynh, Angie Renfro and introduces Dawn Rentz into the gallery’s roster of artists. Working in different styles and mediums, each artist is inspired by the natural world, whether literally or in a more abstract manner.
Elder Gallery– Elder Gallery presents Abstraction Volume 2. There is a lingering question in the art world that asks if abstract painters see the world differently. Elder Gallery in Charlotte will explore this concept with its June exhibition, featuring the paintings of six artists from around the nation. Opens on June 3rd and runs through June 29, 2011.
Charlotte ARTery– Charlotte ARTery transFUSION Spring exhibit will have their closing reception during the June 3rd gallery crawl. Artist talks will take place at 7:00pm with Janet Lasher speaking. Also featuring guest artists Cher Cosper, Allison Luce, Isaac Payne and Terry Shipley.
