July 4th Festivities

July 4th falls on Wednesday this year and if you are new to Charlotte or just looking for new ideas on places to celebrate and watch the fireworks then here are a few recommendations. One of the beauties of South End is if you can get to a roof top pool or deck, then you will have a great view of the fireworks from Memorial Stadium on the 4th.

Your first shot at watching fireworks happens on July 3rd at either Summer Pops at Symphony Park or at the Coca Cola 4th of July Festival at the White Water Center.  There is a small fee to attend the Summer Pops but the proceeds go to the Charlotte Symphony and it’s a very patriotic celebration followed by fireworks. The Coca Cola 4th of July Festival is free to the public; however, they do have a limited number of VIP tickets available for purchase. The Coca Cola 4th of July Festival happens on both July 3rd and 4th with bands and fireworks both nights. Summer Pops gates open at 5pm, prelude starts at 7pm, Symphony starts at 8:15pm and fireworks to start around 9pm. White Water Center festivities begin at 4pm with bands at 4pm, 6pm and 8pm prior to fireworks.

If you are athletically motivated, then you might want to take part in the July 4th Spectacular 4 Miler and 1K Fun Run. It takes place at 11am on July 4th and the course is through the Elizabeth Neighborhood/Memorial Stadium. More details.

If you are not athletically motivated, and the idea of sitting and watching is more your speed, then head Uptown for the Shriner’s International July 4th Parade. This parade will be the longest in Charlotte’s history (I am pretty sure) and steps off at 2:30pm with the route going down Tryon St and terminating at Stonewall. Lots of motorcycles, go carts, horses, and fezzes. More details.

The official Fourth of July Fireworks for the City of Charlotte take place at Memorial Stadium for the Presbyterian Hospital July 4th Spectacular. A free, family friendly festival takes place inside Memorial Stadium starting at 6pm until the fireworks start around 9:30pm. They’ll have live music, games, food, face painting and inflatable games. There is no fee to attend and food & beverages will be available for purchase. More details
