So many great reasons to make a trip to Atherton Market a part of your Saturday morning….great produce and proteins, fresh breads and baked goods, and today starting around 11am we will be churning some homemade ice cream in preparation for the South End Churn Off next Saturday, Aug 4th. We’ll be giving away free samples of our homemade creations so come by for a taste.
The following is the weekly newsletter from Lynn Caldwell, Manager of the Atherton Market. It’s an incredible feature to have a year round, in-door market in South End, and I appreciate all the hard work from Lynn and the vendors to make this happen! To subscribe to the Atherton Market Newsletter click here. Check out the details for this week and make note that the market has new hours as it is closed on Wednesdays during remodeling. The market is open Tuesdays 3-7pm and Saturdays 9am-2pm.
Atherton Market now Accepts EBT!
|What’s happening this week at the Atherton Market? It’s perfect weather for ice cream, and we’re looking to give you some practice tonight for the South End Ice Cream Churn Off on August 4. Whether you are a chef, a foodie, or just someone who has lucked into an amazing recipe for ice cream, take a look at the guidelines here, mix up your ingredients, and bring along the recipe. Tonight will be laid back, and there will not be an official judging. But we’ll need tasters! We should be ready to pass out the spoons no later than 5 pm. If you want to participate as a contestant, please have your batch ready for the churn no later than 3:30 pm. Vendors, area businesses, customers and restaurants are welcome to participate. In other dairy news, Simply Local has an amazing deal on Fresh Mozzarella on Tuesday. She has an abundance of it, and is prepared to part with it for less than $6 per container. With the variety of fresh tomatoes you can get at the market and a little basil you will have yourself an all local Caprese salad or Margherita pizza with very little effort and one stop shopping. This Saturday, July 28, to offer the kids something a little fun and different, Angelique Mitchell of Feather Bliss will provide hair feathers, face painting, and glitter tattoos at very affordable prices. I can’t wait to see the young ones decorated and prancing around the market! We’ll also have some other fun activities for the kids in addition to the ever popular art activity with Ms. Ann. We’d like to think that every day is “Kids’ Day” at the Atherton Market, but this one will be extra fun for the younger set.
The Atherton Market is one of the sponsors for the Know Your Farms Tour in September. I am also on the planning committee, and we still need sponsors and volunteers to work on the tour. Check the tour Web site, and consider how you might participate. We’ll also be selling tickets soon for the tour, to put those dates on your calendar and plan ahead.
We are currently in second place in the America’s Favorite Farmers Market contest! Help us get to first and vote if you haven’t already. In vendor news, our own Coldwater Creek Farm was featured on the cover of Savor NC magazine. Come by and pay them a visit, as they are growing unique things like celery – very labor intensive! I can’t wait for their muscadines and scuppernongs to start coming on.
I hope to have some BIG news for you next week if not sooner. Stay tuned to Facebook, and watch for next week’s newsletter. ‘Til then…Keeping it fresh and local,
