South End Local Foodie Finder

I always enjoy relaying the weekly newsletter from Atherton Market but it dawned on me that South End offers a variety of Local Food options and those stories need to be shared. With that in mind I am starting a weekly post called South End Local Foodie Finder. Here I will relay weekly updates on the places, events and specials pertaining to Local Food in South End. The Atherton Market newsletter will continue to be shared but will add info from Healthy Home Market and restaurants using local ingredients like Luna’s Living Kitchen and The Liberty .  Hope you enjoy the South End Local Foodie Finder!

What’s happening this week at the Atherton Market?

Can you believe that half of August is behind us?  Within the next couple of weeks the weather will become a little more moderate, thoughts will turn to fall, and kids will be back in school.  Summer vacations often come to a close with mixed emotions – many of us are ready for routines again, but not when they become a grind.  Healthful breakfasts, snacks and lunches are one of the biggest hurdles parents face when trying to eat more real and whole foods.  So what’s a mom (or dad!) to do?

The Atherton Market embraces every opportunity to empower you in the kitchen and connect you with local resources, and we’ve decided to offer a mini-series of classes and tips for feeding your kids better food with minimal effort.  The first in the series will be how to create Healthful Lunches that will hold up in a “brown bag,” and will be offered by Jessica Hooks and Chef Manuel Cordray of Just Focus Massage and Wellness.  You can register here, and plan to bring your kids!  The class is limited to 15 families.  The session will last about an hour, and recipes and samples will be offered of the dishes that are prepared.

The following week Chef Robbee Owens-Gill will offer sessions on healthful snacks and fresh, easy dinners made with local and seasonal ingredients.  Signups for those sessions will be in the newsletter next week.

The new school year and our expanded schedule mean that the market will be available for field trips and homeschool outings more days of the week.  We can tailor a visit to the market to many types of class curriculums – gardening, healthful living, even economics!  Get in touch with me at athertonmarket@gmail.com with inquiries and questions.  The market is also a great place to bring your book club or other group, as we have flexible seating that can be used for small meetings.

This weekend we welcome guest vendor Exceptional Terrariums to offer you an opportunity to peruse and shop their locally crafted, one-of-a-kind terrariums.  Get a preview at their Web site and then come visit them this weekend.

If you love fresh seafood and haven’t had a chance to visit the market lately, then you are missing out on what Lucky Fish has to offer.  Summer season at sea is in full swing, and they have a great selection of trout, snappers, shrimp, and other offerings direct from the coast.  Currently find them on Tuesdays from 3 pm until 7 pm, and Saturdays 9 am to 2 pm.  They’ll add more hours soon – stop by to let them know when you’d like to be able to shop.

Save the date Saturday, August 25th, as we’ll be kicking our heels up before the kids head back to public school with music by Katie Oates!

Last but not least, sign up to participate in the Know Your Farms Tour this year!  You can get tickets on the Web site, or we’ll have some available at the market later in the week.  They could still use some volunteers, so if you are free on Saturday or Sunday, September 15th or 16th sign up and you’ll be able to participate in the tour for free.

Keeping it fresh and local,

  1. Checked out Atherton Market for the first time, this past weekend, and loved it! Great post, and thanks for sharing about the Know Your Farms tour – might have to do that.
