Upcoming Local Food Events

Between Healthy Home Market, the Atherton Market and all the restaurants that support local, we have a good bit of local food oriented events happening in the coming months. Below is the newsletter from Atherton Market manager Lynn Henderson which lays out the events at the market for the next couple months. Additionally, I’ve added the event details from Healthy Home Market and one event happening this Saturday is an Oktoberfest themed beer tasting. Mark your calendars and get ready to eat!

What’s happening this week at the Atherton Market?

Autumn is working out to be very “event-ful” for us.  From First Fridays to cooking demos to music and classes, there will be more reasons than ever to visit the Atherton Market.  Pull out your calendars, and get ready for the rundown.

This morning (October 16th) at 10 Kimberly Aprill of the Natural Wonders Playgroup is facilitating a free “try before you buy” class.  Next Tuesday she’ll begin a 10 week series that you can register for online or in person tomorrow for a bit of a discount.

Saturday, October 20th is our Halloween Costume Parade and Pumpkin Decorating Contest.  For $5 you will get a pumpkin and access to acrylic paints and other decorative items.  You can also bring your own decorations, but the creative work has to be done while you are at the market.  There will be four age categories: 5 and under; 6 through 10; 11-14 and 15 and up.  Rules will be posted this week at the market, and the judging will take place on Tuesday evening, October 23 by a group of food bloggers who have been invited to the market for a special event.  Winners will be announced on Wednesday, October 24th and you can pick up your pumpkin until 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 27th.

Next Wednesday, October 24th is Food Day 2012.  We are going to celebrate with a live rendition of the beloved book Stone Soup.  At 10 am and again at noon we will read the book and then actually make Stone Soup with Chef Max Parker!  This will be fun for kids of all ages.  There will also be homesteading demos by Cluck Around, including cheese making and fermentation, and various tastings around the market.

Other upcoming events with more details to come:

Tuesday, October 30 – Halloween Eve – Ghost Stories on the Haunted Trolley, early Trick or Treating with the vendors, pumpkin rolling, and adult libations!

Friday, November 2 – Oyster Roast, Wine Bar and First Friday Art Crawl IN the market

Saturday, November 3 – Harvest Festival –A cooking demonstration by Chef Manny, music by Katie Oates and fun activities for kids!

November 10th – Kathleen Purvis “Pecans” Book Signing

Wednesday, November 15th – Windcrest Organics Wreath Making Workshop (contact Mary Roberts at info@windcrestorganics.com to sign up)

Friday, November 24th– Christmas Trees arrive!

Friday, December 7 – First Friday Holiday Arts Market

Saturday, December 15th – Nose to Tail Underground Dinner featuring Chefs David Quintana and Geoff Blount (Stay tuned for details coming soon on reservations and tickets!)

We also have various field trips, playgroups, and community events filling up the calendar, so we’re going to be busy.

Of course the finest feature at the Atherton Market is our vendors and their products.  New this week you’ll find lamb bratwurst from Windy Hill Farm, and a gift-worthy line of jams at Simply Local from Copper Pot and Wooden Spoon, including flavors like Strawberry-Rhubarb and Roasted Red Pepper and Peach Jam.  Rice is also in stock again, so make sure you pay her a visit this week.  Grab a pumpkin latte from Monk’s Groovy Beans and enjoy a few moments of peace before you get on with your day.

Keeping it fresh and local,
Lynn S. Caldwell
Atherton Market Manager
