There have been many reports that a grocery store was coming to South End and that it would be a Publix but yesterday The Charlotte Observer shared the official announcement from developers that a 55,000SF Publix along with 8500SF of additional retail and restaurant space is planned for South End. Below is the original post we shared with the links to past articles as well as images of the proposed location.
You may have read about it late last night in The Charlotte Business Journal or seen the news story on WBTV but Will Boye, Senior Staff Writer for the CBJ is reporting, “Publix Super Markets Inc. is planning a store in South End on a 4-acre site along South Boulevard, according to real estate sources and documents.” Having Publix in South End would be huge and in my discussions with South End residents and business owners they have said the 2 main amenities lacking in South End are 1) a grocery store and 2) a park. We can now scratch those two items off the list as Park and Rec was able to acquire land for a park on the corner of S Tryon and Kingston Ave (Park Announcement Post) and now the grocery store report.
It is important to note that we do have a couple of great locations already in South End for local food and natural food…Healthy Home Market and Atherton Farmer’s Market and with all the new apartments being built (approximately 2000 new units) South End will have much to offer on the food front. I am a huge proponent of local, organic and all natural but occasionally I like an Oreo Cookie or Wheat Thins and now I’ll have all my basis covered.
To help orient where this proposed Publix is located, I took the following pictures this morning. It’s all empty lots but exciting to see this new development!
