South End is lucky to have a Charlotte’s first and only indoor, year round, producer only farmer’s market…the Atherton Market. The market is open 5 days a week Tue 9am-7p and Wed-Sat 9am-2pm and is located in the historic Atherton Mill. Each week the market manager, Lynn Caldwell, sends out a market update so you can plan your shopping accordingly and I’ve reposted here in case you aren’t on the mailing list. Do stop in for a visit soon!
What’s happening this week at the Atherton Market?
With Valentine’s Day coming up, cupids and hearts are everywhere. Whether you write it off as a “Hallmark holiday” or can’t wait to surprise your sweetie, we’re there for you this week. While we’ll be open on THE day (and relax… it’s not til next week), we’re going to “Go Red” this weekend with some things that we think you’ll enjoy, including tastings, special offerings from our vendors, and fun activities for adults and kids alike.
Our friends at Friendship Trays deliver thousands of “Meals on Wheels” every week to fortunate recipients who might not otherwise eat well. To make their days especially bright on the 14th, we’re going to set up a station this Saturday to make simple cards to distribute along with dinner to say that someone is thinking of them. Kids and adults can get creative with the supplies we provide. Make as many as you wish. Our goal is to make 600 cards. Yes – six hundred!
Back for a very limited engagement, we welcome Barking Dog Chocolatiers and their very popular sweets. They were such a hit over the holidays we convinced them to join us again for the weekend, and possibly again next Tuesday if they have the inventory to make it work.
Exceptional Terrariums had the bright idea to let kids design and make their own terrariums for a nominal fee. They’ll have a station set up with containers and bits to design a unique creation to take home and enjoy. Of course Ms. Ann will be in the Kid Zone with seasonal crafts for the kids. And if you’ve been considering a canine adoptions, come visit the foster families of RescuedMe with their lucky pups. You might just find a furry addition to your family.
Irene at Cottage of Flowers and Things will have roses and other red flowers, as well as orchids and arrangements, both fresh and dried. And you can place a custom order with Cardais Gourmet by February 9th to pick up next week for your sweetie. Wendy will be fully stocked with salted caramels, fudge, specialty cookies and other gourmet treats (including gluten-free!) to purchase on the fly. She also assembles gift boxes, which can include items from other market vendors.
That is all about the weekend, but between now and then we’re open for weekday hours with a great assortment of produce, meat, staple items and more to keep your lunch boxes and dinner plates full of local goodness. Notable at The Food Hub are shitakes, broccoli, and lots of organic kale! And Simply Local has several different varieties of French Broad chocolates as well as many other treats to tempt you. So what are you waiting for? We’re open 5 days a week with WI-FI, plentiful parking, and urban provisions for the savvy shopper. That’s you. Come find us.
Watch our Facebook page this week for a very special app created just for you, to say thanks for show us the love!
Keeping it fresh and local,
Lynn S. Caldwell
